Filed Under: Feel like you're always looking for the perfect journal? Well, now you can stop looking.
Overview: Leather journals, books, and albums handmade using methods learned directly from Venetian bookmakers. Iona founder Mychal Mitchell has personally made thousands of these extraordinary books. You're buying excellence, because you're buying experience
Appreciate: Each book is personally constructed (no machines) by Mychal Mitchell. She uses only surplus leathers obtained from other manufacturers who, for one reason or another, cannot use the leather themselves. Between the covers is archival paper, meaning the paper is acid-free, which in turn means that your entries, photos, and other memories will be safeguarded from decay as your journal is passed on to your heirs
Know: Leathers are available in a variety of extraordinary colors, including colors you can request custom just for you. The Iona website has high resolution photos you can sort through to get an idea of what's typically available. Because the leather comes from other leathermakers, often there are scars (think character, not defect!) that will give your journal a true one-of-a-kind finish
Special Comments: While the leather may win all of your initial attention, in the end it may be the archival paper you'll appreciate most. Hand-torn pages are stiched directly to the leather, which is an authentic Italian method. Choose from four types of paper for your journal, depending on your use: White, which you can put most any pen to without fear of bleeding; a whiter white Watercolor Paper, made of 100% cotton rag, suitable for, you guessed it, watercoloring; a Hemp Paper, which is darker and therefore presumably better if you're going to Thoreau yourself in the woods for a while; and Arches Black, for mounting photos on
Cost: Starting at $65 for the smallest journal; up to $520 for a one-of-a-kind padlocked book (these are really cool)
